When to order
If you're marrying during peak wedding season (June–October) you may have to order it sooner then the usual five months notice.
Cake Style
Look to your personal style, wedding location, season, favorite color or flower and even your wedding dress for your cake style inspiration. Having a winter wedding? Maybe an ice blue cake with sparkling crystals all over it is your style. The fancier cake you have the more expensive it will be.
Fresh fruit and flowers
Top your cake with fresh fruit or flowers. Sugar-icing and marzipan decorations are labor-intensive and costly.
Finalize your list
Determine a head count before you meet with a confectioner. The price of a wedding cake is calculated by number of servings and level of design.
Taste test
Before you commit to a baker, sample some cakes and fillings to make sure your confection will taste as good as it looks.
Icing 101
Discuss various options with your baker, but be sure to choose the right icing for your wedding location. For example, shy away from butter-cream and whipped cream icings if you're having an outdoor wedding. The heat causes the icing to melt.
Cheaper idea
Have a small, beautiful wedding cake on display for the ceremonial cutting with extra sheet cakes waiting in the kitchen to serve your guests.
Shape up the savings
A square cake will serve 10 to 30 percent more people than a round cake of the same dimensions.
