How To Tuesday: Soothe yourself without food

I recently came across the book "50 ways to soothe yourself without food" I found it to be insightful. So I thought I would share some ideas from it with you.

I figured this book would relate great to my "30 Day Challenge".

So how do we self-sooth with food?
• Eating when we aren't hungry but can't stop ourselves (grazing)... remember we aren't cows.
• Searching for something to eat, but not being able to find something to satisfy so you just continue to eat.
• Eating to ease boredom or after a stressful event or while you are nervous.

There are so many reasons why we turn to food for it's self-soothing effects. Something unique I learned from "50 ways to soothe yourself without food" is when all you can think about is food concentrate on your senses.

It's the 5-4-3-2-1 method of counting on your senses

1. State one scent you can smell
2. Name two sounds you can hear
3. Describe three sensations your body is feeling, such as temperature, the texture of your clothes or your feet against the ground.
4. Identify the colors that you see.
5. To yourself, begin naming five things you see in front of you.

When you finish doing this, it's likely that you will be thinking about nothing, not even food... well of course unless food is directly in front of you. Repeat the steps until your thoughts are less clouded by food cravings.

I have been focusing on doing this and have noticed that it is really starting to make a difference. It really gets me aware of other things besides shoveling food into my face.

Worry Beads

Get a set of komboloi, which is the Greek word for worry beads. Massaging the beads in your hands has a calming and soothing effect. As a result your nerves will be calmed down and you will have a clear mind to focus on the clicking sound of the beads and not food.

the Scarlett O'Hara approach
Snacking is often an avoidance technique. Instead of avoiding what is going on; create a box that will be the temporary storage for things that may be bothering you, or things you cannot deal with at the moment. When you struggle with a problem, write about it. Then stuff the piece of paper into the box. When you are ready to deal with a problem take it out of the box and deal with it by writing down your emotions. Keep your mind busy, and don't allow it to avoid situations when they get to be too "tough".

Teatime

If there is a pattern to your stress eating, you may want to schedule teatime for yourself at some point in the day when you might be prone to eat for emotional reasons. Black tea is said to lower stress hormones and chamomile is known for its calming properties. I have family in Scotland and they make sure that they take time for tea everyday. It helps them regroup. I noticed that when I was taking teatime for myself I was less prone to have emotional eating binges.

Yoga

It's a great way to gain flexibility and just escape from the world. Yoga teaches you how to tune in to your sensations so that you can feel your body and know it well. It also helps you learn when you are physically hungry or emotionally.

Bucket List

If you feel the urge to eat, pause for a minute and ask yourself "what do I really want out of my life?" Then make your list....
• I want to accomplish...
• I want to travel to...
• Something I have never done but would love to try
• I would love to own a pair of...
• I want to take a trip to...

Next pick something from your list and start planning how YOU can make it happen!

These are just some fabulous idea that I got from "50 Ways to Soothe Yourself without Food." I found the book to be insightful and absolutely fabulous. I think it will really help me focus on the goals of my personal 30 day challenge and beyond my challenge!

What do you think of these ideas? Do you have any ways that you soothe yourself without food?

xo

I have decided what I want... now I am going t make it happen!

It's a new month and it's time to create a new me. After much deliberation and decision making I have decided to embark on a "30 day challenge."

Here is how my 30 Day Challenge will go

• Work out twice a day
• 30 miles a week
• Eating healthy (limiting processed foods amping up fruits and vegetables)
• Drinking at least 72 oz. one gallon (128 oz.) of water
• Eat every three hours NO EXCUSES
• No eating after 6:30 pm

I am sure things will be modified and added during the challenge, but these are the basic guidelines that I am working to adhere by. I have no doubt in my mind that this will indeed be a serious challenge, but maybe it is the one that I need.

Let the challenge begin!

Hasn't been back AT ALL! He should be starved and extremely tired if he ever returns! Hope you all are enjoying your Sunday, and you have lots of sunshine!

How to Tuesday: Girl meets Grill

With spring lurking and summer around the corner we have our BBQ's ready and our forks in hand. As you may have realized all food is not created equally therefore I have your How To Guide for the healthiest grilling choices when it comes to meat!

These are based on 3-4 oz. portions.

You want to look for "round" or "loin" cuts, such as top sirloin, ground round and tenderloin.

Good Choice: Beef Tenderloin
(~ 218 calories and 9 grams fat)

Better Choice: Top Sirloin
(~ 207 calories and 7 grams fat)

Burgers can be a healthy option. Just avoid your high calorie bun, cheese and pounds of mayo and you'll be great!

Good Choice: Turkey Burger
(~ 266 calories and 15 grams fat)

Better Choice: Ground Sirloin
(~ 244 calories and 12 grams fat)

Grilled chicken obviously a fabulous summer protein choice!

Better Choice: Tyson Frozen or Fresh Chicken Breast
(~ 110 calories and 2 grams fat)

Grilling Tips

• To keep meat juicy, trim the fat off after cooking, and let the meat rest a couple of minutes before cutting into it.

• Marinate chicken over night or for a few hours in italian dressing, pineapple juice, teriyaki sauce, etc. It will add flavor with less calories.

• Brush on a couple of tablespoons of BBQ sauce on your chicken before grilling for just 40 calories.

• Don't press your spatula into your burgers unless you like eating rubber!

Do you have any grilling tips to share? Spill it!

I'm bring sexy back....

Heidi Montag is NOT

What the Hello Kitty? Really? Do guys find this attractive? Do you girls think this is perfection? Personally I think this is obnoxious and extremely unattractive. Honestly could she have made her girls any bigger? I wish for mine smaller and hers are like flotation devices... who wishes for that? Spill your thoughts!

Look at what I found in the freezer! Score! I must have had some left over from last time I was home. Thank goodness I didn't feel like making oatmeal this morning!

VitaTop: 1 pt.

Breakfast: 1 pt.

It was so rainy this morning that I wasn't able to hit the road for a run... so I figured I would do weights. I also think I should not run every single day.. I don`t want to hurt myself or completely tire myself of running. Today I upped my 5 lb. weights to 8 lb. weights. It was harder, but hopefully the results will be greater!

For lunch I had my favorite salad in the entire universe. Michiganers you should check out Kruse and Muer their house salad is FABULOUS! Not to mention they sell the secret dressing! So of course I got a bottle while I am home and am working to recreate the salad. Divine!

Salad 3 pts.

Lunch: 3 pts.

Over the river and through the woods here comes exciting news

Hello Loves!

This afternoon I set off to the park to go run on the trail. I figured no cars, and having to worry about getting hit... perfect.

I left with a little bit of inspiration courtsey of my Inperspire Towel! If you do not have one you should look into getting one of their sweat towels... amazing, and motivational...love it!

I packed a banana in case I started to cramp. I didn't want the cramp to ruin my positive attitude and Monday mindset! In order for my banana to not get smashed to disgusting pieces I used my Banana Guard. Honestly I don't know how I survived college without this. Just throw it in my bag and go. No fuss no mess, and a delish banana when I want it... fabulous!

I walked near the train tracks for awhile... figured no train would come... there were multiple trees over the tracks.

While I was walking and running I came across this sign! Challenge? Perhaps. Since the positive mindset was here I decided I would try the 5k trail and time myself just for fun.

The trail took me over a couple bridges and through the woods and I completed it in...

22 minutes!!!!!!!!

I don't know if this is good or bad, but I felt accomplished! I didn't cramp up and after my run I headed home... chugged down some water and had my banana. I think that I have FINALLY showed myself that I can do it... and I am so worth it!

My two favorite workout inspirations! I would love to have Reese's body

or Cheryl's, but I would also love to have her moves!

Song suggestions wanted! I need a fun playlist for running... any favorite songs you have? Let me know

Ways to drink more water

We have already been in the 80's this year, and this was a great reminder of one of my goals: to drink more H20. While I know all the good that water does for my body such as, calms hunger, flushes out toxins, makes my skin glow.. etc. My goal is to be drinking eight to 12 glasses of water a day. I have learned many ways that help me accomplish this goal and I thought I would share them with you!

• Drink through a straw.
When I worked for a publication and was trying to up my water intake one of my co-workers informed me that if I drank water through a straw I would drink it quicker and more of it. It totally works!

• Flavor Flavor.
I will add a lemon wedge to my water bottle.
Place orange and lemon wheels in a water pitcher
Add fresh mint leaves and lemon to a pitcher of water
A couple strawberries to my water glass

• Freeze it
I always freeze a water bottle part way and keep it in the freezer. Cold water in the summer is key for me, and with a partly frozen bottle I know I will have water for a little while. My Vapur "anti waterbottle" is always in the freezer.

Want a cocktail, but will consider a "mocktail"?
Try a splash of POM pomegranate juice and lemonade in sparkling water. LOVE IT!

Have any smart sipping strategies that should be added to the list?

50's vibe

Heyy loves! Hope your weekend is going great! Here's my less then healthy for you dinner... oh well. Sometimes you just need a little deliciousness in your life!

The boy was having a wee bit of a craving for biscuits and gravy. So since breakfast for dinner is one of our favorite things around here we decided that it would be perfect to have breakfast for dinner. Yum Yum! I made hash browns, sausage gravy and some "flaky" Grands biscuits

I had a biscuit with sausage gravy and a small amount of hash browns on the side. I also had a fruit salad that I put into my "Measure Up Bowl" in order to control portion size.

Biscuit: 4.5 pts.
Hash Browns: 1 pt.
Sausage Gravy: 4 pts.
Fruit Salad: 1 pt.

Dinner: 10.5 pts.

Breakfast: 2 pts.
Lunch: 4 pts.
Smoothie: 1 pt.
Banana Muffin Top: 2 pts.
Dinner: 10.5 pts.

Total points used: 19.5
(well it started off a decent day... dinner kind of killed me)

Chex Party Mix

The other night the boy inquired about possibly making Chex Mix so while at the store I bought all the ingredients that I needed. The fun thing about Chex Mix is you can pretty much add anything and everything that you want to it.

Melted a stick of butter in my Pyrex dish and popped it in the oven @ 250 until melted.

While the butter was melting I mixed up my ingredients for my Chex Mix in my new confetti mixing bowl made of recycled melamine! The bowl is made by Zak Designs, and worked absolutely perfect for my making Chex. The bowl has a 1950's retro look which I am absolutely loving!

I get so many compliments on my confetti bowl. Zak Designs has a lot of things that would absolutely be perfect to give as a house warming gift or a wedding gift.

Once the butter was melted....

I added my seasoning packet... mixed it all around and then added the goodies.

Yum! Into the oven for an hour.

Yum!

Runners I need your help!

I am not a runner... I actually really do not like it at all! Yikes! But in effort to drop weight for my wedding, and go from Flab to Fab. I have decided that I am going to attempt to do some running. I need your help and advice though!

What are your favorites of the following?
• headbands
• shoes
• sports bras ( please note I do not have little boobs so I will need to double up my sports bras)
• running outfits.

Any possible advice? I would be extremely grateful!
